The most common problem with our goal-setting is that we set them based on the realities of others.
So imagine this, two neighbours, A & B live on the fifth floor of a ten story building, neighbour B, closes from work at 3:00pm, arrives home at 3:30pm, takes the elevator and gets to her apartment at 3:32pm — neighbour A who is claustrophobic, closes at 3:00pm, arrives home at 3:30pm but has to take the stairs to get to her apartment at 3:37pm.
Every time Neighbour A comes up, she hisses at the fact that neighbour B beat her again.
‘Common sense’ may tell you that this analogy is lame because 1- why is Neighbour A even fussing about who arrives first? what does it matter? after all they do not even have the same destinations (apartments) and 2- is she not aware of their differing circumstances?
But the reality is too many times, this is the way in which we compare ourselves to others and consequently set goals based on these perceived ideals and the realities that aren’t ours.
